    OPAL

    Our OPAL Journey Begins

    OPAL Lead – Mrs Wilson

We are excited to announce that our school is beginning its journey to become an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) School. As a specialist SEND school, we recognise that play is not just an enjoyable part of the school day; it is a vital part of how many of our children learn, communicate, regulate their emotions, develop friendships and build independence.

OPAL is a nationally recognised programme that helps schools transform playtimes into rich opportunities for learning, wellbeing and personal development. Through OPAL, we will be creating more inclusive, engaging and meaningful outdoor play experiences that meet the diverse needs of all our pupils.

For our children, high-quality play can support:

    • Improved communication and social interaction skills.
    • Greater confidence, independence and resilience.
    • Enhanced physical development and coordination.
    • Better emotional regulation and wellbeing.
    • Increased opportunities for creativity, imagination and problem-solving.
    • The development of friendships, teamwork and cooperation.
    • Greater engagement with the school environment and a sense of belonging.

As we begin this exciting journey, we will be working closely with pupils, families, staff and the wider community to develop our outdoor spaces and provide a wider range of play opportunities. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy, freedom and learning that play brings, and we look forward to sharing our progress with you along the way.

Together, we are creating a school environment where every child can thrive, explore, learn and have fun
